Underated game of the day - Metal Warriors

Category: My Thoughts
underated-game-of-the-day-metal-warriors

Looking for a game that never got the attention it deserved? Well you wouldn’t have to look further then Metal Warriors on the SNES.

Developed by Lucasart and published by Konami and released back in 1995 only in the US. It was about as late is it could get as the Playstation launched only a few months later which I believe was one of biggest factor in why this game got overlooked.

The year is 2102, the Earth has been at war with the evil Dark axis ruled by evil dictator Venkar Amon. Very little remains of Earth’s force and you as one of the few must strive to protect the Earth and end the war using your advanced robotic weaponry.

It came shipped with a decent Single player campaign but what really made the game great was the versus mode.

With six mech suits and a dozen stages to choose from you are bound to come back to this game again and again.

You had The Nitro

Pros: Armed with a highly accurate automatic plasma rifle, a powerful energy sword, a defensive shield and a smaller defensive shield that can be deployed in mid-air to absorb small amount of damage as well as damage enemies if they come in contact with it and a jetpack making it capable of continuous flying and giving it great agility.

Cons: Has a relatively weak armor, lacks firepower.

The Havoc

Pros: Armed with a Assault rifle, Bladed chain weapon with great range, rocket boosters on feets for quick movement on ground and for boosting higher jumps, strong ballistic shield, tough armor.

Cons: assault rifle inaccurate, not as agile as most others.

The Drache

Pros: rapid-fire plasmagun cabable of firing in all directions(depended on which button is pushed),highly mobile aerial movement, devastating aerial dive attack.

Cons: very week armor, no shield(except when doing the aerial dive)

The Ballistic

Pros: High caliber Machine gun, powerful Fusion cannon, launch a smash attack against a enemy or for quick getaway, armor plated shield, good agility.

Cons: Has to remain stationary to fire weapons which also makes it vulnerable to areal attacks.

Prometheus

Pros: Two huge mounted battle cannons, flamethrower for close quarters combat, mines that drift upwards damaging and deterring areal attacks, shield providing 360 degree shielding, the toughest armor in the game, ability to bridge gaps.

Cons: slow, unable to jump or sprint.

The Spider

Pros: Capable of latching on to any surface and crawl up it, hovering drone shoots plasma shots not unlike the Nitro, fast melee attack where the drone smashes into enemy, able to shoot web that paralyzes enemy, able to camouflage itself.

Cons: No shield, camouflage useless in multiplayer due to split-screen setup.

—————————————————————————

Throughout the stages there are dispenser that randomly give out power ups such as a rocket launcher, grenades, speed up,one that gives you the ability to walk on the ceiling and one that allows you to throw powerful bombs with a timer at your opponent. They also give out an item that will restore your mech suit to full health. This is one of things that makes this game great, while your friend has almost killed you and chasing you all around you can get lucky enough and run into a health pack completely turning the match around making your friend swear out loud which is a satisfying experience let me tell you.

Now if there is no health pack appearing or you are completely cut off from getting to a dispenser by your opponent you have the ability to leave your mech and with a jetpack you can try to escape and go get another one that is available in various quantity and types in stages.

If there are no other mechs left, you are pretty much dead. You are armed with a gun of some sorts but against a gigantic mech suit it has no chance however you can ask your opponent to have a duel on even grounds with him leaving the suit, this of course gives you the chance to steal his mech and this one of the most awesome things ever in any videogame.

Here is a gameplay video from the versus mode so you can check out how the game looks and plays.

If there is one game I really want to see on the Virtual Console it’s this masterpiece. This is without a doubt one of the best versus game I have played in my life and I highly recommend tracking down a copy of it if you are into versus games, to me it even rivals the greatness that is Street Fighter.

Progress…

Category: My Thoughts

I’ve been able to successfully restore the site(I hope) and nothing was lost in the process.

Don’t have a clue what happened exactly but I suspect it had something to do with a caching plugin I have for the site.

Just come to my attention that the RSS feed is broken. I’ll have to look into that after the holidays.

Issues…

My website has been messed up and I can’t use my normal theme anymore so I guess this one will have to do until I can this sorted…

Super Mario Bros had a Deeper Storyline to it?

Category: My Thoughts
super-mario-bros-had-a-deeper-storyline-to-it

I was digging through some of my old stuff and I happened to come across the original manual for my Super Mario Bros/Duckhunt which I thought had been lost through the passage of time. Surprisingly it’s still in very good shape for it’s age.

I started reading through it and it’s actually a pretty good guide to how to play the game. I really wished I had given it a read back then but I was only like 4 years old and it was it the first game I ever got(had played some before that)

Then something caught my eyes, the storyline to Super Mario Bros.

Let me just type it up so you can see.

One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horse-hair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin.

The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of the great Koopa turtle king.
Mario, the hero of the story (maybe) hears about the Mushroom People’s plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People.
You are Mario! It’s up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic of the Koopa!

It mentions that the Mushroom People were into stone and bricks, but WAIT since they have been turned into bricks would that mean that while you are playing through the game and breaking bricks for powerups, coins or points you are actually murdering the good people of Mushroom kingdom?

After you rescue the princess I think this is what would happen.

Why is there no mention of Luigi in the story? I know he’s not a important character and never has been for the Mario series, but shouldn’t he be at least acknowledged.

I never even bothered to find out what exactly the game was about back in the day and I doubt anyone really did. You just played the levels without putting real thought into why you were running into castle after castle and who or what all these things you were killing were and why other then to just beat the game and get a high score.

Super Mario Bros may have been written by a guy on a acid trip. But if it hadn’t been for this guys love for Mushrooms Videogames might have died after the crash in 1983, so kudos to Shigeru Miyamoto,Hiroshi Yamauchi and Takashi Tezuka.

Uwe boll’s Contra!

I’m REALLY happy this is a fake trailer, the last thing I want to see is Uwe boll butchering Contra to death.

It’s hilariously cheesy and bad though. :D

Majel Roddenberry died today at her home from Leukemia.

Perhaps best known as the Voice for the Main Computer in the Star Trek series and she also played a nurse in the original series.

R.I.P

Star Trek won’t be the same without you…

This is just insane.

Clearly the game designers for this game are sadistic. I’ve played hard 2d shooters but what I’ve played is nothing when compared to this.

Home is where your Ass is.

Category: My Thoughts
home-is-where-your-ass-is

Home on the PS3 has finally reached Open beta Stage!

I logged in on it on Friday. Only to be greeted by timeouts. So after a few more attempts I finally got in. Then a message pops up, where Sony says they are aware of the issues people are having with connecting and they say it’s due the heavy stress on the server.

So after that, I get into the character customization thingimajig.

It’s not that bad, you get a decent variation of body type, face type and clothes, hair etc. You can even change your height, and appearance with sliders.

So anyway, I make my character.

I enter into my private room by the shore side. You can hear seagulls and the sea. It’s a pretty soothing place to be. The view is also pretty good, although a little pixelated.

You soon find out though there is absolutly nothing to do there. You get a tutorial on how to get started. I decided to visit the Central Plaza.

I was anticipating loading time. But Nooo it turns out I had to download the Plaza area. So instead of just making everyone download everything the first time around you have to download them as you enter them(it’s only a one time download for each, would be pretty idiotic if you downloaded it again and again)

So anyway, when I finally enter the Central Plaza I see lots of ghosts running around. At first I was like…uhhhh what?

Then I realized it’s the other players, it just takes awhile for it to download and display all the characters.

From the Central plaza you can access all the other sections and you can also hook up with other players and make friends…but what people really do is dance like goofs on a dance stage located there and shout out “lol” or “A/S/L” or something to that effect. There also seems to be an inordinary amount of people with names such as “IARERUBBER1345″ or “MEGADUDE33661″

Oh I forgot to mention, you also have access to all kinds of emotes, like waving and dancing and prancing(well okay maybe not that), etc, you know the usual stuff.

So next I decided to visit the bowling area. It’s where you can go bowl go figure, play pool or even hit up the arcade!

Again, I had to download the area before I could access. I mean why was it so hard to just have it all in one big package the first time around?

I entered the arcade finally and I was greeted by repetitive techno music and noise as well as ghosts yet again.

The first thing I noticed was there are two “TVs” on the wall that show commercials for PS3 products(in this case their new wireless PS3keyboard)

I then headed on to the arcade and boy was it pathetic. Only like 10 arcade cases and only three games. Luckily when I arrived one of them was free so I tried it out. It was called Ice Breaker. It’s a arkanoid/Breakout clone where you are a penguin holding a plank and trying to keep a ball of some sorts from falling down to the ground and destroying all the blocks on the screen, it’s not bad but it’s definatly worse then Arkanoid.

I played it for awhile but then I quit. I tried another game called Echochrome. It’s a really weird game, I had no idea what the hell it was about or what I was supposed to do so I just moved on. I didn’t get to try bowling or pool since all the pool tables and bowling lanes were occupied so I just headed on out again.

I headed to the Mall next. Some download time+load time later. I ented the mall. I ran around looking for stores. I went into them to check what they had to offer. One store had clothes I could buy on my avatar for money. Another had furniture for my apartment. There was also a store that sold housing. I could buy myself a summer house and party there with friends I’d invite.

So after not wasting my money on frivilous nonreal junk I saw a screen where a show was going on with this cute asian woman. I just had to watch. Not much to say really, it was all PS3 this, and Sony that. You can press x while near the screen to go to fullscreen mode which is actually a pretty neat feature.

So after the show was over and the cute woman wasn’t there anymore.

I headed on out to the Central Plaza again and this time I thought the theater would be worth checking out.

When I arrived inside, you guessed it I saw nothing but ghosts. We were all in this hall and all that I could see on the screen was Downloading video…

I went to find a seat so I could sit down and watch for a little while or rather I would have, if this wasn’t the noisest and most chaotic theater in the world. It was like that scene in the gremlins 1 where the gremlins sit down to watch Snow white and the seven dwarfs. I had like 20 people on the floor in front of the screen going all like “Loooool” “CAN I HAS YER PHON NR?” oh don’t get me started on the disco dancing, or the robot dancers.

The rule DOWN IN FRONT doesn’t seem to apply in this theater.

So a trailer started. It was for the movie Twilight. I’ve already seen in the cinema. It was okay, but it really needed more action, it is a vampire movie after all.

I wasn’t seeing anything good on in the theater so I again went outside and on to my apartment. I enjoyed the view a little bit and then I logged off.

So this basicially sums up my experience with Home thusfar.

All in all, it was just hilarious. If this is supposed to be somekind of a new interactive breakthrough community service for PS3. Then…I don’t know, it just isn’t.

I think I can sum it all up with this.

Couldn’t have put it any better myself even if I tried.

Helllloooo

helllloooo

I maybe have been slacking off when it comes to actually writing something for the site up late so I’m going to make some sort of an effort.

The main reason why I haven’t been writing/reviewing anything is because I haven’t been buying any games due to my focuses being on paying bills and buying a few presents for Christmas, I haven’t either been doing any extensive gaming lately so I don’t really have much to write about in the first place.

Left 4 Dead is great and all, but I think I’ve mostly moved on to other things now, at least until they add more content to the game.

I’ve mostly been messing around older games lately. I picked up a copy of Metal Gear Solid 3: Substance a few months ago, mainly because I never actually finished it so I’ve been meaning to go back and give it another shot. It’s a good thing I have a 60GB PS3 because my sister has my PS2. I managed to grab one just before it got sold out and I’m really happy about that. Especially considering the prices it’s going for these days. I saw on ebay that someone had a buy now price of $1700 for a sealed 60gb PS3.

That’s just insane.

I also messed around a little bit with Twisted metal 2. That game is awesome. It’s kind of a predecessor to Carmageddon, and I used to have lots of fun playing that game in versus mode.

Other then that I’ve been messing around with video editing. I can’t say I’m a pro when it comes to it. I’ve only done a few school projects and one really goofy Mortal kombat video me and my friends did back in 2004. I spent hours on that thing. Did credits and everything for it but unfortunately due to a hard drive crash it was lost to the sands of time.

We also did a few other things, like if I recall correctly a Ninja Monks versus Italian Mafia movie.
It was pretty stupid, but it was tons of fun to make. But again that was lost because the miniDV cassette got ruined due to some glitch in the camera if I remember correctly.

I’ve also been working trying out doing video reviews for games/movies, inspired from the work of Nostalgia Critic and the Angry Videogame Nerd.

The other day I recorded a little(long) review for a bad NES game based of Bill and Ted’s Most excellent Adventure Movie called *drum roll* Bill and Ted’s most excellent videogame adventure…
Yeah that really rolls of your tongue.

The movie is stupid enough as it is but this game takes it to a whole new level.

This is the second review I’ve attempted, the first one was for Deadly towers and…well it sucked bad. Not to say this one is any masterpiece. I have no problem writing English but when it comes to speaking it, my accent/tongue gets in the way sometimes.

I’d love to be able to link it but unfortunately I’ve been hitting a snag. When I’ve tried to render it the video output is black while I can still hear the audio.

I don’t know why this is. I guess I’ll try some other compression or just do it full frames and then compress it with another application and see if that does the trick.

I have some ideas for other stuff, the problem is that I don’t have a Video camera so it’s kind of hard doing videos without one. All I’ve got is a crappy webcam and my cellphone.

I suppose I could link my Deadly towers review, but oh god is it bad. Half the time I don’t even know what I’m saying.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-48743422263797982&hl=en

Well I hope it’s worth a laugh or two only because it sucks. :p
